📰 The Latest News in Climate Tech
There’s been a lot of action in the climate tech industry lately. Let’s look into some of the more interesting developments!
⚡️ Power Moves in Silicon Valley
The Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG), a business association of companies like Apple, Uber, Google, and Meta, is aiming for three climate-related policy initiatives to make it onto California’s 2024 ballot 🗳️
Last week, the SVLG (established in 1977 by HP's David Packard) introduced three proposals to improve power grid efficiency, climate resilience, and clean energy investment in the region 🌎
One of these initiatives, called the Transmission + Interconnection Working Group, encourages the creation of a coordinated power market among states in the West through a Western Regional Transmission Organization (WRTO) 🔌
Translation 👉 This proposal is about revamping how California gets electricity. Currently, each state manages its own electricity, but Silicon Valley wants to connect California's electricity with other nearby states to help use more clean energy. Word is already making its way through the California government that RTOs are the best way to continue towards 100% clean energy production 👀
🤔 Pollution can help us fight climate change…?
Although cargo ships emitting sulfuric smoke seems detrimental for the environment, they might have unintentionally slowed down climate change by creating cloud trails that cools ocean waters by reflecting sunlight ☁️☀️
The surprising results of this accidental experiment in geoengineering (the controversial concept of changing the Earth’s environment to delay climate change) were caused by a UN rule in 2020 that reduced sulfur emissions from the shipping industry by over 80% 🚢
Although decreasing sulfur emissions is a big win, it has also resulted in an unplanned demonstration of how chemical clouds can keep the Earth from overheating 🌡️ In fact, some scientists think that the lack of these clouds may have contributed to record-high summer temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean this year, alongside other factors like El Niño and underwater volcanic activity 🌋
While some experts suggest purposely creating reflective clouds as a way to combat global warming, the potential risks involved have kept this approach from being widely embraced by the scientific community. Still an interesting phenomenon to know about though!
